About PLA
PLA is the easiest material to print with. It's affordable and suitable for both beginners and experienced users. It can be used to print detailed models, figures, and rapid prototypes that do not require increased mechanical, chemical, or temperature resistance.

PLA is the most common filament and is known for its attractive appearance and ease of printing. It's an excellent choice for large objects due to its low thermal expansion, which results in minimal warping. At the same time, its low melting temperature also makes it suitable for small parts.

Although PLA is not as strong or durable as some more advanced materials, its versatility makes it ideal for a wide range of applications, including large objects, miniatures, concept models, and prototypes that do not need to be extremely durable.

Before printing, it is recommended to read about print surface preparation in our dedicated article and material table.

Basic properties

New spools equipped with OpenPrintTag
Prusament filaments are delivered on a redesigned spool, which introduces several improvements for an even better printing experience from October 2025. The new spool features a simple locking mechanism that makes disassembly quick and easy, allowing for effortless refilling.

The spool also remains securely assembled during filament drying, even at higher temperatures. Additionally, its slimmer dimensions ensure compatibility with a wide range of multi-color and multi-material printing systems.

Each new Prusament spool now comes with a fully rewritable NFC tag based on the OpenPrintTag standard. It is designed to work across brands and ecosystems. It is free to use, free to expand, and open to anyone who wants to build on it. Most importantly, it works completely offline. All important data is stored directly on the tag.

Your printer can instantly recognize the spool, without reliance on cloud services or vendor lock-in. The OpenPrintTag, attached to your Prusament spool, contains essential information about the material and can be read with the Prusa mobile app.

What can you expect?

Prusament PLA is our own internally produced filament. The entire manufacturing process is closely monitored and tested – we guarantee a precision of ±0.02 mm (±0.03 mm for blends) as well as very consistent colors.

You can inspect the parameters of every single spool we have produced on prusament.com. Check out an example spool!

Manufactured in-house by Josef Prusa
We were not satisfied with the quality of the filaments available on the market. Therefore, we decided to produce our own! Prusa Research is the only 3D printer manufacturer with its own filament production.

Premium quality materials and thorough testing
The entire manufacturing process is closely monitored and tested – including filament diameter, color consistency, and mechanical properties – to ensure that every single spool is perfect.

±0.02 mm guaranteed production precision
We believe that the industry standard of 0.05 mm is not sufficient for perfect 3D printing. Therefore, we guarantee a precision of ±0.02 mm (±0.03 mm for blends) as well as very consistent colors in our filaments.

High quality that you can check yourself
We are the only manufacturer that allows you to inspect the parameters of every single filament spool. Scan the QR code on the spool to see all details online (see the example spool).

Beginner Tips & Tricks

Popular with both beginners and experienced users
PLA is the easiest-to-print filament we produce. It is reliable and requires no special print preparations or complicated post-processing methods. If you are new to 3D printing, it's best to start with PLA before moving on to other materials.

Sanding
For post-processing PLA, it is best to use wet sanding. Without water, friction will quickly heat the plastic, causing it to melt locally and deform. Without water, the abrasive material will also quickly clog.

Gluing
PLA can be glued with many types of adhesive. We recommend super glue for most parts. Certain PLA filaments can also be glued with acetone, but this largely depends on the additives and colors used.

Notes

This PLA is manufactured in-house by Prusa Polymers.

Filament with a diameter of 1.75 mm is produced with a precision of ±0.02 mm (±0.03 mm for blends).

Before printing, ensure that the heated bed surface is clean, as described in the 3D Printing Handbook.

If you choose a 2 kg spool, please download and print the holder for 2 kg spools, as it will not fit in the standard spool holder.

For filament drying, please follow the instructions in our article.
