The Original Prusa MMU3 is our latest solution for printing with up to five filaments at the same time at high speed and low waste. As an addition to the original Prusa i3 MK3S+ and MK4, it enables automatic switching between loaded materials. The MMU3 is fully supported in PrusaSlicer by an easy multi-material painting tool, offering efficient and filament-saving color printing for everyone.

What is Multi Material Upgrade?

It's exactly what it sounds like - it's an optional add-on that allows your single extruder printer to print with up to 5 colors (materials) at the same time. The MMU3 features five filament feed points. Load up to five colors of your choice, slice the object in PrusaSlicer, and start printing. The system automatically selects the filament using the selector, loads it into the extruder, and the printer begins printing. When it's time to change colors or materials, it does so automatically.

The high-flow nozzle in the MK4S allows for much faster printing. However, when using the MMU3, the standard nozzle makes much more sense. Why? While the MMU3 works fine with a high-flow nozzle, the increased volumetric flow results in higher filament waste during printing. In other words, the MMU3 delivers the best performance, same speed, and highest efficiency (lowest waste) when combined with the standard nozzle in both the MK4 and MK4S.

Efficient multi-color printing

Every time you change filaments, you need to clean the previous material from the nozzle to prevent cross-contamination. There are different ways to do this, and the MMU3 uses an efficient "wipe tower" - it's a compact, partially hollow block next to the printed object where the filament is cleaned and the pressure in the nozzle is stabilized. All the filaments are collected in one place, and you don't have to worry about plastic pieces piling up around your printer.

We offer several ways how to save filament and reduce plastic waste - PrusaSlicer gives you options to "wipe into infill" (the printed object's infill is used as a wipe tower), or you can use "wipe into object" where another object is used as a wipe tower - it will be very colorful, but if you need a functional part for example, or you want to paint it later, it is a great way to reduce plastic waste to a minimum.

Ever since the release of MMU2S, we have been collecting and analyzing feedback from our community. This allowed us to focus on specific areas that required our attention. MMU3 comes with reliable operation, easier maintenance and troubleshooting.

IMPROVED RELIABILITY AND MAINTENANCE

Our main focus was to make assembly, daily operation and maintenance easier than before. With more reliable filament switching, improved communication between the MMU3 and the printer, and self-healing routines, the MMU3 can easily complete very complex objects.

PRUSASLICER MAKES PRINTING EASY

PrusaSlicer is our in-house developed slicing software. Our team is constantly working on new features that make 3D printing easier. Take advantage of multi-material painting to transform single-color objects into colorful creations, and save filament by using wipe to fill and wipe for object features!

BRAND NEW MMU3 FIRMWARE

For the MMU3, we have rewritten the MMU3 firmware from scratch, leveraging full two-way communication between the MMU3 device and the printer. The MMU3 can diagnose and resolve various situations on its own, and also displays detailed (and real-time) information on the LCD screen, along with status messages and error descriptions.

LOTS OF USEFUL SMALL TWEAKS

Almost every aspect of the MMU has been retouched and redesigned. The entire filament path is more reliable with larger PTFE tubes for less friction. The filament buffer comes with new slide-out cassettes, the filament sensor has been reworked, and there are new metal parts inside the MMU3 for improved reliability.
